Srinagar, Feb 04 (KNO): Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav on Tuesday said that J&K has recorded 645 cases of Mumps, a contagious viral disease, over the past two years. Jadhav, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), informed the Parliament that the region saw 450 and 95 cases in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The Minister said that the Union Territory of Ladakh, which had no recorded cases of Mumps in previous years, reported 111 cases in 2024. Despite the rising number of cases, no deaths have been reported in J&K or elsewhere in India during this period. Pertinently, Mumps is a contagious viral disease and can be prevented through the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. However, the government has clarified that Mumps vaccination is not currently part of India’s Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), which covers 12 other preventable diseases—(KNO)
